About Shirley

Shirley Close maintained a highly successful career in opera, oratorio and concert for over 30 years in Europe, America and Asia.  The majority of her career was as a mezzo-soprano, but on the advice of Sir Georg Solti, she made the change to dramatic soprano.

Her breadth of knowledge of repertoire and subsequent years of teaching has built her solid reputation as a comprehensive pedagogue of technique and interpretation.

She is currently on the voice faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Manhattan School of Music and also maintains a private vocal studio of professional singers in New York City. Prior to her move to New York City, she was Professor of Voice at Florida State University.
